How Hearts Mend
Comfort in the Things
of Steel
~~~
My Scarlet S
“Just focus on the here and now. Just give it time.” The things they say to see us through.
But the wounds dig deeper in this endless void. So deep, I find comfort in the same four walls, the ones I count on to be dull and gray.
It’s where I sit beside the things of steel: with one that cleans the clothes I wear; and another one that dries them.
Safe inside these cold, dark walls, it’s where he finds me every day. “Are you ready to come home now?” he whispers in my ear.
“Ask again another day,” is what I usually say. But today I tell him, “Come for me tomorrow.”
And when tomorrow comes, I feel a ray of hope, dreaming of my distant home. But just as Darkness nears, I find these words written by the one I mourn.
Dearest Julia,
Of all my memories of being a mother, the day you walked into our lives is the one I cherish most. From the very start, Adrian and I knew there was something so very special about you.
And now we know you’re the finest wife and companion that our son could ever have. And we also know you’re the dear, sweet daughter we longed for all along.
With Love and Affection,
Your Katheryn
And from now on, I find solace in these words of love and not from lifeless things of steel.
Dear Friend,
At first, it was a single drop of blood that led me to my pen. From that small beginning came stories I never expected—stories of healing, of longing, of the strength it takes to mend a broken heart. Some of them draw from the echoes of my past; others from the ache beneath imagined tales.
The above excerpt helped give shape to the emptiness I felt after losing someone I love. It was with my pen I found a way to describe the bleak, dark void I felt within.
But my pen didn’t stop there. It went on to offer me the words of comfort I had longed for all my life. Though I never heard them said out loud, they warm me on the written page.
My hope is that this scene inspires a moment of your own—a scene, a letter, a small expression that gives voice to your deepest hopes and dreams.
Yours Truly,
Darwin’s Mistress
